What Is CEREC?

It is a CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) system that allows dentists to create custom ceramic dental restorations right in the office, while you wait. The technology has been around for decades and has been refined to the point where same-day crowns are every bit as precise and durable as lab-fabricated ones, and in some ways more consistent because they eliminate the handoffs and variables involved in the traditional lab process.
How the Process Works
The same-day crown process at Lake Harbor Dental looks like this:
Your tooth is prepared just as it would be for a traditional crown, removing damaged material and shaping the tooth to accept the restoration.
Instead of a traditional impression using dental putty, we use a digital 3D scanner to capture a precise image of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. No goopy trays, no gagging, and a more accurate result.
The digital scan is used to design your custom crown using specialized software, allowing us to create a restoration that fits your bite and matches the shape and size of your natural teeth.
The design is sent wirelessly to an in-office milling machine that carves your crown from a solid block of high-quality ceramic in about 15 to 20 minutes.
The crown is checked for fit, adjusted if needed, stained and glazed to match the color of your surrounding teeth, and then permanently cemented into place.
Start to finish, the entire appointment typically takes one to two hours depending on the complexity of the case. You leave with a permanent crown, no temporary, and no return visit required.
