Schedule A Checkup

When you get the good news, try to also schedule a regular cleaning and consultation visit with your dentist. People may think that you shouldn’t go to the dentist during pregnancy, and that is simply not the case! Many normal procedures can be done during pregnancy, however, it is best that you inform your dentist right away that you are pregnant and they can help you with any questions or concerns that you may have.

Be Aware Of “Pregnancy Gingivitis”

Not every woman will experience this, but many do. Pregnant women can develop what is known as “pregnancy gingivitis” which can lead to gum discomfort and bleeding while flossing and brushing. Tell your dentist about any gingivitis symptoms that you are experiencing during your pregnancy. They may recommend more frequent cleanings to help combat the effects of the disease. Left unchecked, “pregnancy gingivitis” can lead to more severe dental and health problems down the road. Also, it is ok to keep using a fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash during pregnancy, but ask your dentist and doctor just in case they have any specific instructions for you.

Food Cravings

Some women will experience intense food cravings during pregnancy and depending on the food, it may also lead to increased plaque buildup and tooth decay. Be conscious of your cravings and sweets intake and don’t forget to brush and floss at least twice a day during each trimester! This will help prevent cavities that can occur during pregnancy.

Take Your Vitamins

During pregnancy, your body can require more of a certain type of vitamin and mineral than usual. In order to take the best care of your teeth and gums, make sure that you are getting plenty of extra calcium and vitamin D which the body needs to properly utilize nutritional calcium. You can find these in most dairy products like milk and cheese, fatty fish like salmon, eggs, and soymilk. Outside of getting these nutrients in your diet, you may want to ask your dentist if they have any recommendations on a multivitamin that you can take in order to supplement your dietary intake of these nutrients.
